On Wednesday, September 21, students in grades 7-12 from the Aberdeen Catholic School System (Roncalli High School) spent the afternoon doing service work throughout the community of Aberdeen, SD. Two groups of students, a group of senior girls and freshman boys, specifically asked to come and work with our Presentation Sisters.
These young men and women worked so hard and assisted in so many ways from cleaning in our Sister’s Dining Room, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and our outside grounds to washing windows and organizing cabinets and storage areas. They also picked and peeled apples, assisted in reorganizing a sister’s room and helped distribute bingo prizes. These students were able to spend time working alongside the sisters, visiting and learning about each other.
In its second year, the goal of this service project started as an additional way for students to live out the mission of the Catholic Church. The projects are a lesson in social justice, and kids learn life skills as well. They learn to work with many types of people, and often times their eyes are opened to the many areas of need in their community. The students are out in the community helping those less fortunate, less able, or simply in need of some help. This service also directly correlates to our Sisters’ Mission of “working for justice, alleviating oppression and promoting human dignity, especially among the poor.”
