Memorial Services for Sister Michelle Meyers
Sister Michelle Meyers, 97, Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died February 14, 2025 at Dow Rummel Village, Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial Mass will be held, 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 20, 2025 in the Dow Rummel Village Chapel, 1321 W Dow Rummel St, Sioux Falls. Visitation will start at 10:00 a.m. Liturgical Wake Service will be held, 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at the George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls. Visitation will start at 5:00 p.m. Inurnment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Aberdeen, SD. Wake services will be livestreamed at www.georgeboom.com.
Clara Loretta was born February 8, 1928 in Chamberlain, SD, to Eva (Schmit) and Michael Meyers and was raised in Montrose, SD. She graduated from Montrose High School in 1946, entered Presentation Convent January 6, 1949, and professed her vows on August 10, 1951.
Dreaming of becoming a teacher at a young age, Sister Michelle earned a Bachelor of Education from Northern State University, Aberdeen, a Masters in Chemistry from University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN, and a Masters in Theological Studies from Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, Chestnut Hill, MA.
Sister Michelle joyfully served over 60 years in education ministry. A beloved teacher and college professor, she shared her smile and love of life with high school and college students. She taught in Aberdeen, Huron, Mitchell and Dell Rapids, SD, Willmar, St Cloud and Marshall, MN. She served as the Director of Religious Education in several Minnesota parishes and inspired and encouraged others as a speaker, retreat and spiritual director. She traveled to many states where she conducted retreats and seminars for numerous colleges, universities, religious groups, health care institutions, businesses and social service groups. In 2002, she moved to Le Sueur, MN and continued uplifting others with her spiritual direction until moving to Sioux Falls in 2020.
Always in service to others, Sister Michelle served on the congregational leadership council. She worked tirelessly in advocating for women in social justice and peacemaking ministries and published numerous justice articles. She stated, “My passion for peace making is fueled by my efforts for justice for women in Church and society.” Along with receiving many awards throughout the years, she cofounded the New Ulm Diocesan Task Force on Women in Ministry with Sister Kay O’Neil and others. Sister Michelle was an active PAX Christi member promoting the gospel message of peace.
Sister Michelle loved spending time with her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed reading, gardening and traveling. Sister Michelle reflected on her life, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the many opportunities and blessings I have been given from our gracious and generous God.”
Sister Michelle is survived by her family of Presentation Sisters including her dear friend, Sister Kay O’Neil, and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Ambrose (Viola), Martin (Venisa), Paul (Bertille), Christine (Nick) Turmes, Rosie (Bruce) McCorkell, Mary (Si) DeJonge and Marvin (Audrey).
