Jean Huntimer was born June 7, 1927 in Madison, SD to Mae (Molumby) and Walter Huntimer and graduated from Winfred High School, SD. She entered Presentation Convent September 29, 1945 and professed her vows on August 10, 1948, receiving her religious name of Sister Josephine.
Sister Jean attended Notre Dame Junior College, Mitchell, SD in 1948, received a BA in education from Northern State University in 1963 and a MA in education administration from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI in 1971.
Knowing she wanted to teach children about God, she followed her heart and became a teacher. For 45 years, she shared her love of learning by enriching lives of students, both as a teacher and a principal in Catholic schools throughout SD, MN, MT and NM.
She transitioned to parish ministry for 15 years in Huron, SD. She shared her compassionate spirit with parishioners as she taught bible studies, visited those in the hospital and took communion to the homebound. Feeling called to do more for those less fortunate, Sister Jean started a thrift store called St. Francis Shop. She continued her service to others by volunteering at Avera St Luke’s Hospital’s Aux. Guest House and the Convent Library. Her gift of hospitality opened her heart to lifelong friendships and stirred within her a passion to live fully into the spirit of Vatican II. She enjoyed puzzles, playing the piano and cards. She hoped she will be remembered for her faithfulness to God, her community of Presentation Sisters and “having common sense and a sense of humor.”
She is survived by her family of Presentation Sisters; sister Julie (Dan) Lassegard, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harold, Vernon, Father Don CSV, Max; sisters Sister Laura PBVM, Rita (Nygaard), and Kathleen.
