Ministry

Lantern Light

The Conference of Presentation Sisters is group of eight congregations of Presentation Sisters located in North America who come together to collaborate and communicate on issues of ministry, spirituality, and social justice. On its 50th anniversary, the Conference initiated plans for the Collaborative Ministry Project (CMP) in August 2003. This ministry project began in September 2005 under the name Lantern Light. Presentation Sisters from various North American congregations work together among the homeless and underserved in Tulane County of New Orleans, Louisiana, in Tulane County. Tulane County is one of the poorest counties in the United States.

SISTERS IN MINSTRY:

Marie Roche

Growing up in rural Newfoundland was a privilege and a blessing for which I will always be grateful. On finishing high school I entered the Presentation Convent in St. John's, Newfoundland, where I continued my studies. My music teaching career included all grades from K- 12 and, having completed thirty-four years, I retired from this ministry in 1992. From 1999-2003 I served on our congregational leadership team. During that time, I also served as Human Resources Director for the congregation. I am also a member of our Justice Committee.

There has always been a yearning within my deepest self to reach out in a 'hands on' way to the 'cry of the poor.' Volunteering for our Collaborative Ministry Project is a step in the realization of this dream to live and work among the poor and marginalized with a listening and compassionate heart, and to learn from their simplicity and acceptance of life's situations.

Vera Butler

I was born in Portmagee, County Kerry, Ireland. I went to the Presentation Sisters in Clonmel County Tipperary for high school, and soon after entered the congregation as a novice.
I became a grade school teach and taught in Ireland before becoming one of the founding sisters of our mission in Louisville, Colorado. After five years in Colorado I returned to Ireland for a short time to teach and to manage the boarding school for girls. I returned to teaching in Metairie, Louisiana and grew to love New Orleans and the rich culture of the people. I was assigned to be principal in Warner Robins, Georgia, but returned after this ministry to the New Orleans I had come to love. I later worked in development ministry.
After seven years I needed a change and began ministry as Outreach Coordinator for St. Joseph's Church in New Orleans. I have so enjoyed the privilege to develop and expand that ministry and presented this ministry option to the collaborative discernment group. At this encouragement, the group chose New Orleans for the first collaborative ministry.

Enid Storey

I was born in Corona, New York and came to know the Presentation Sisters at St. Michael’s High School, New York City. For years I was an elementary school teacher and administrator in New Jersey and New York. I then served as a nurse various health care facilities in New York. I began ministry with Lantern Light in September 2005.
