MinistrySince coming to Aberdeen in the 1886, we have focused our ministry efforts on meeting unmet needs. Initially the need was for education. Soon after, the need for healthcare grew. Our ministry still has its roots in teaching and healing. Today, however, this teaching and healing may come in less traditional forms. The common thread that runs through each of these ministry efforts is a desire to joyfully go where need calls most loudly. As an apostolic congregation and in the spirit of the Apostles, we are dedicated to ministering to the needs of the people while living among them. In the words of Bishop Walsh, we go where we are needed but not necessarily wanted and stay until we are wanted but no longer needed. That is the apostolic spirit! From teaching youngsters as foster grandparents to teaching individuals the steps to spiritual growth and development, our education ministry has expanded and flourished as the needs for learning have taken us outside the classroom and into the lives of those we serve. From walking alongside those suffering with HIV and AIDS to facilitating healing after divorce and loss, we continue to adapt our healing ministry to promote deeper healing of the whole person. Of course, we also continue to sponsor Presentation College and Avera Health and have sisters involved in these ministries. As we continue to go where need calls out most loudly, we follow our mission of caring for and empowering those in need.

The Presentation Sisters who taught us at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Dell Rapids challenged us to ‘Go out and make the world a better place!’ So with the faith and tenacity of women of our rural prairies, I joined the Presentation Community and accepted the challenge. I prayed and taught and administered in a number of Catholic schools from Aberdeen to Minneapolis, to Mitchell. Then after serving ten years as President of Presentation College I was encouraged by our Bishop to study canon law and serve the Diocese of Sioux Falls in its Diocesan Tribunal.
For most of the past eighteen years I have ministered to people seeking annulments for failed marriages. I have listened and journeyed with all kinds of struggling people who have tried to make sense of the broken parts of their lives and who desire to build a future of more graced relationships with spouse, family, Church and their merciful God. I have discovered what a healing experience it is for a person to explore their journey through the light and the dark times, and to have someone listen them through the lens of gospel living. I also teach in the marriage preparation program of the Sioux Falls area, sharing with these aspiring spouses-to-be the theology of marriage as well as the insights into what has been proven to decay and destroy well-intended marriages.
For several decades I have been involved in governance of Catholic health care, serving on boards of the Presentation Health System (now Avera), and the Catholic Health Association of the United States. To those board rooms I have been able to bring my experience and observations as a Catholic educator, canon lawyer, minister to marriage, and student of the gospels. I also serve on the core team and the faculty of the new Avera Leaders in Ministry program, in which we forward the spiritual formation of men and women to empower them to effectively lead the Avera health system according to gospel values.
One of my favorite asides is my participation in two small communities of Presentation Cojourners, men and women who gather monthly in our homes to share prayer, faith journeys, questions and wisdoms.
I have found diverse and interesting avenues in which to ‘make the world a better place’, which is to share in Jesus’ redeeming work. My Sister-life and ministry have brought great joy and satisfaction to this woman of the Dakota prairies. I would recommend it to anyone who has the grit to give her life to God’s service.
